Wings Are White

AUTHOR'S NOTE: this was written for Trope_Bingo. Chronologically, for the 9th Doctor, Jack and Sara, this takes place before Marriage At Stake.

The Story:

The Doctor, Rose and Jack were standing around the console with wide smiles on their faces, having just come back from a party on a resort planet. "So, Doctor, where to now?" asked Jack.
The Doctor had just opened his mouth to answer, when Rose suddenly wobbled and fell backwards. The Doctor's expression turned from one of joy to one of concern, as Jack catches Rose and asked her if she was okay.
"I... I'm not sure... I just... feel a bit... faint" Rose answered, a bit dizzily. "Maybe it's exhaustion from the party" The Doctor said, but he didn't sound sure, "Perhaps you better put her to bed". Jack nodded and lifted up Rose to carry her, bridal style, to her bedroom.

When Jack came back to the console room, the Doctor was looking at console with a steely look. "What's the matter Doctor?" Jack asked. "Someone or something has taken control over the TARDIS" the Doctor answered. "Is that possible?" Jack asked. "We're being drawn in by some kind of force" The Doctor said, still looking at the console. "Who could do something like that?". "I don't know". Suddenly, the TARDIS stopped. "Well, we've landed" The Doctor said and turned to the doors. "Let's go out and see who's behind this, shall we?".

Sara Kingdom was still staring at the TARDIS. She still couldn't decide whether she wanted the house to take it away or not. Before she could make a decision a man, with shaven head, big ears and a leather jacket, stepped out of the blue box. At first the man looked suspicious, almost angry, but ones he lied eyes on Sara, he suddenly smiled. "Oh! Hello Sara!" he said cheerily. "Nice meeting you again. It's been ages!" He continued and looked around the house with a curios look on his face "What is this place? And why does it seem oddly familiar?".
Sara was confused. "Who are you?" She asked. "I'm the Doctor!" he answered, still looking around the house. "But..." Sara said "You look nothing like the Doctor I knew! And... if you really are the same person, then how come you're not surprised to see me alive?". The Doctor turned to Sara and looked at her in silence for a while before he finally spoke. "Ah.." he said "I see, it hasn't happened to you yet". "What are you talking about?" asked Sara, still confused. "What hasn't happened to me yet?". "Oh, nothing!" The Doctor said dismissively "Forget I said anything. Anyway, I-".

The Doctor was interrupted as Jack burst out through the TARDIS doors. "Doctor come quickly! Something strange is happening to Rose!" Jack shouted. The Doctor turned towards him and gave him a quick look of concern, which was mirrored in Jack's eyes, before he ran into the TARDIS. Jack was about to follow the Doctor inside, when he spotted Sara Kingdom.
"Oh, hello, who are you?" he asked her. "My name is Sara Kingdom" she answered. "Well, nice to meet you Sara Kingdom, I'm Captain Jack Harkness" he said, while shaking her hand. "That man, is he really the Doctor?" Sara asked. "As far as I know, yes" answered Jack. "But, he looks so much younger than the Doctor I knew" Sara said. "Well, he's a time traveller, so maybe this is a younger version of him" Jack Suggested. Sara shook her head. "I don't think so" she said "I knew who I am. So this can't be his first meeting with me". "Well, then maybe he ages backwards or something" Jack suggested instead "I mean, he's not exactly human, so who knows how that works for him".
"Anyway" he added "I better go and see if I can help him to help Rose. Are you coming too?". "I..." Sara hesitated for a moment, before she finally made her decision. "Yes" she said, simply, and followed Jack into the TARDIS.

As soon as Sara came into the TARDIS she stopped, stunned, because in front of her stood a blonde girl with a large pair of beautiful white wings on her back. Sara was too shocked to speak. She just stared at the girl in silence. Then, the Doctor showed up from behind the girl. "Oh, hello Sara, are you coming with us?" He asked. Sara just nodded, still unable to speak. "Great!" the Doctor said "anyway, Sara, this is Rose. Rose, this is Sara". "Hi" said Rose, with a faint smile. "What's happened to her Doctor?" asked Jack. "She's an angel" Sara finally said.
The Doctor was just about to tell Sara that Rose was in fact human, when two balls of light suddenly appeared in the console room. The four of them watched as the balls changed form into that of two winged beings. "Greetings" Said one of them "We are the feathereens". "And I'm the Doctor, may I ask what you're doing in my TARDIS?" asked the Doctor, a bit impatiently. "We inhabit the time vortex" explained the being who spoke before "and we have done so peacefully for a very long time, but recently a conflict has arisen between the genders of our species. We need the help of a female outsider, to work as an independent bridge between us". "If you're talking about Rose-" the Doctor started, but was interrupted by the other feathereen. "The blonde female has been chosen as a suitable person for this task".
"But, Rose is human!" the Doctor protested "She can't survive out in the time vortex!". "She can now" the feathereen explained. "We have not only given her wings to fly with, but have also created an invisible shield around her body. She will not be harmed". "You still can't ask her to-" the Doctor began, but was once again interrupted, this time by Rose. "Doctor... it's all right" She said. The Doctor turned and stared at her in surprise. "I know what they want me to do" she continued "and it's all right, I can do this!".
"But..." the Doctor said, but was interrupted once more. "We will bring her back to you once her mission is completed" the feathereen assured him. The Doctor sighed. "Rose, are you sure you want to do this?" he asked. "Yes" She answered simply "I'll manage. I will come back". "All right" The Doctor finally gave in. Jack opened his mouth to protest, but closed it again as the Doctor gave him a hard look.

"Will you please take your ship into the vortex" one of the feathereen requested "It'll make the voyage easier for your friend here" he nodded toward Rose. The Doctor didn't reply, but did as he was told. Once the TARDIS was in the vortex, both feathereens turned to Rose and reached out their hands and asked her to take them. Rose did as she was told and the three of them were transported out of the TARDIS and into the vortex. The Doctor, Jack and Sara watched on them on the scanner in silence.

Roses are red

Wings are white

Rose flew away

And out of sight
